Our Vision

In the Netherlands we use 3.6 earths to sustain our current way of life. We have to use materials more sustainable to ensure a healthy planet for future generations. ComposTerra comes with a solution of re-using materials, by transforming organic residues into functional products.

  • Every day we hear stories of threats to our natural environment, ranging from greenhouse gas emissions, plastic pollution to unsustainable resource extraction. Our current methods of producing and consuming goods and materials are part of the cause of these issues. One common factor, and one that’s very relevant to our day-to-day lives, is our reliance on single-use plastic products. The Netherlands has banned single-use plastics since July 2021, and many countries are implementing similar policies. However, there aren’t many sustainable/recyclable alternatives that are widely available.

We need to prevent plastic pollution and rely less on fossil fuel-based materials to maintain a healthy ecosystem. With ComposTerra, we create a range of materials made from different organic waste streams. These materials keep their original structure and are biomaterials that still have valuable qualities despite being disposed of as waste. By transforming these materials into new products, we extend the life cycle of materials. Some of our products are able to replace single-use plastics that have a high risk of ending up in nature, mostly single-use plastic items, like take-away packaging. We aim to prevent plastic pollution by creating compostable alternatives to plastic products. ComposTerra’s biomaterials are fully compostable without releasing microplastics, low-tech to make, and affordable to produce.

Our team believes that the circular transformation is inevitable given our planet’s limited resources. The ComposTerra team first came together through our shared interest in taking action towards a local circular economy at Precious Plastic Maastricht.

We are driven to work towards a better future through combining our forces, taking value out of the variety of our cultural backgrounds and skill-sets. Our team combines expertise from material science, business engineering, design and social sciences.

  • 2018 Beyond Plastic & Biopress

    2019 PPM Research

    • Precious Plastic Maastricht started researching the production of materials from organic waste. They experimented with different waste streams from local sources, and looked into organic binding agents to improve material durability.

    2020 BioMaas

    • Members of Precious Plastic Maastricht came up with BioMaas to initiate an organic waste recycling project in Maastricht. In this city, climate action, circularity and sustainability are the focus of many institutions and organisations.

    2021 Winners YPPC

    • On 7 January, the finals took place for the first ever Young Plastic Pollution Challenge. Among the 8 competitors BioMaas was announced as the winner. The Plastic Soup Foundation and the Spronck Foundation made €50,000 available to catalyse BioMaas. BioMaas kicks off as ComposTerra B.V. in April.

    2022/23 Company development

    • ComposTerra develops material recipes, prototypes, and conducts market research to bring the first products to the Dutch market in 2023.
